Hyperactive Sexual Desire Disorder
Hyper sexuality is the desire to engage in human sexual behavior at a level high enough to be considered clinically significant. Hyper sexuality is marked by a debilitating need for frequent genital stimulation which, once achieved, may fail to result in the expected long-term sexual or emotional satisfaction. This dissatisfaction is what is believed to encourage the increased frequency of sexual stimulation, as well as additional physiological and neurological symptoms.
Causes:
It is not known what causes this disorder, but some possibilities include brain abnormalities, natural brain chemicals, androgens, and changes in the brain's circuitry.
Symptoms and Signs:
- Men and women with compulsive sexual behavior may be married or in a committed relationship and seem to live otherwise normal lives.
- In reality, they typically have trouble establishing and maintaining emotional intimacy.
- They seek gratification through sexual behavior, but are not likely to achieve emotional fulfillment and their lives may feel empty.
- Compulsive sexual behavior can affect most anyone regardless of sexual preferences, including heterosexual, homosexual and bisexual preferences.
Diagnosis:
Some psychiatric experts believe it's associate with obsessive-compulsive disorder, while others believe it's related to addiction and still others to impulse control disorders.
Treatment:
Small studies have suggested that certain medications may be helpful. Several forms of psychotherapy may help in treating hyper sexuality, such as psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy, and family therapy or marriage counseling.
